Middle School Music Curriculum
Students in middle school have three choices to choose from to fulfill the music class requirement: band, show choir, or general music. Students who participate in band and show choir are required to perform at the concerts and are given a grade for their participation. General music students do not perform at the concerts but do put on an in-school concert at the end of the year.
Band - Students who participate in band meet twice a week for rehearsals and perform in several concerts throughout the year. Band members continue learning how to play their instrument and develop their musicianship through instrumental music. The instrument is supplied by the family or, in special circumstances, loaned by the school.
Show Choir - Show choir is directed by the fabulous Mrs. Blanchette who also teaches show choir at Peninsula School and Sumner High School. Rehearsals are once a week and center around the show choir model of singing and movement. In addition to our school concerts, the MVS show choir competes at the local and state show choir competitions.
General Music - Students who elect to take general music still perform and sing, but the focus is mostly on general music concepts like history and culture. We incorporate world drumming in addition to learning about things such as jazz history.
