K-2 Curriculum at Mountain View School
Students
at Mountain View School receive music once a week and learn how to create,
perform, respond to, and connect music in a variety of ways. We prepare
for two to three concerts a year.
Kindergarten - Students in Kindergarten learn the basic building blocks of music. They learn how to use their head voice to sing, how to find a steady beat in a song, learn about patterns in music, and musical opposites. We move around a LOT and have a LOT of fun!
1st Grade - Students in 1st Grade build off from what they learned in Kindergarten and expand upon their learning. Students begin learning how to read music through rhythms and Solfege, how to play Orff instruments such as xylophones, increase their singing range, and learn new games and activities that help them become even better musicians.
2nd Grade - Students in 2nd Grade use all of the important skills gained in K/1 to really start doing something cool things. Musical independence is a common theme throughout all of the grades, but especially in 2nd grade when students start learning how to perform ostinatos which are repeated musical patterns in time with other ostinatos. In addition, students start learning more complex musical ideas like how notes can be placed on a staff to create high and low pitches.
